"When thinking about God, we need to first think about His love and what that means to us. We can think about how big and powerful He is, how He is creator God and all that goes with it, but we also need to understand His love and His heart for us or we really can't see Him at all.
True love is something we don't see often in this world, and so it makes it hard as people really don't even know what love is. God says of Himself that He is love, and we see that love itself comes from Him, out of Him and that there is no such thing as true love apart from Him.
It is to Him that we must look, but that presents a problem for people, as to believe that God, who is a holy, perfect and an all powerful God, one who will have to judge all people because of their sin, sending people to hell, could actually love them makes absolutely no sense. It seems foreign and contrary to who He is in light of it all and so their sin, doubt and lack of understanding cause them to not only turn away from Him, but even to run from Him.
They have a conscience, and they know they have done wrong, and so "How could a Holy God who cannot even look on sin love me? They feel He is too holy and must for sure be angry with them and so it can be one of the hardest things in life for people to truly believe that He loves them.
We know that is true because even those who ahve received Chris, have had all their sins washed away, who are now His children doubt that time and time again. So we know just how much we all must come to understand His love so that we can receive it and Him and rest in Him.
God's Word speaks to us about who He is, about His love, and about His love for us and the fact that He proved it to us by what He did, should tell us all we need to know."
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and His love is perfected in us."
"By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in Him, and He in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us."
"God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as He is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love." 1 John 4:9-18
God’s love is having compassion and empathy for people right in the midst of their hurt, dysfunction, rebellion and sin. That is what Jesus did for us as well as everyone else. The only thing left is for people to believe it.
It was His great love for us that sent Jesus here to die for our sins, so that we could be forgiven them and live forever in His presence without fear. It was Jesus great love for us that chose to come, and chose to be the one time, all time, sacrifice for all the sins of the world.
To care that much, and to go to those lengths to prove how much you love the very people who are sinning against you, are contrary to you, are even sometimes fighting against you is something we just can't understand unless we understand Him and who He is.
It is left for us then, to be moved with compassion for people, to respond to people with an understanding heart that knows their need not just their wrongs, and to show grace and mercy for them right in the middle of it all.
It is for us to be caring toward them, to work so that if it is at all possible, we can help so that their wrongs do not overcome them. It is to stand in the way if you will, and be used of God so that His love can block what their destructive ways would bring to them in the end.
Their wrongs don’t always have to go unaddressed, but there needs to be an understanding of respect and grace for their humanity.
It must be that we who have been shown mercy, in turn show mercy to someone who is not doing well, because they usually don’t even realize how much they are in need. And we know that it is the right response, because that is what was shown to us in our need.
We must have a heart like His, a heart that responds with love, care, forgiveness and grace. That's real love, and it only comes from God and those of His people who will pay the price to walk in it.
